Lt Gen Jatinder Singh, chief of National Defence Academy in Pune, on Tuesday expressed anxiety over the decreasing number of Punjabis in officer cadre in the Indian military.
Delivering his keynote address during 5th All India Punjabi Conference, he said about 20 years ago, the number of Punjabis, particularly Sikhs, topped in the Indian army but now it has come down to eighth position.
“We have not been facing any problem as regard to recruitment of jawans in the Indian army but the number of officers has come down drastically, particularly from Punjab,” he added.
Lt Gen Singh, who was conferred Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) by the President, said the NDA had been producing 2,100 cadets every year and till now they have produced 30,000 officers for the Indian army.
The NDA chief lauded the efforts of the Punjab government in setting up Maharaja Ranjit Singh Preparatory Institute for Military Training in Mohali. He urged the Punjab government to ensure that the best talent among students was trained for the armed forces in the institute so as to make it one of the most prestigious army training institutes in the country.
On this occasion, Lt Governor of Pondicherry, Iqbal Singh said that there was no danger to the existence and survival of Punjabi language anywhere in the world.
Describing Punjabi University as the lighthouse of Punjabiyat in the true sense of the term, he stressed upon the need of establishing trusts all over the country, which could work for the furtherance of Punjabi language, art and culture.
In his presidential address, vice chancellor Jaspal Singh said the changing face of world, under the heavy impact of technology, was casting its impact on every aspect of life, including languages across the world. It was therefore an opportune time to draw a ‘decisive blueprint’ that could pave the way for weathering any storm that could influence the growth and development of Punjabi.
Punjab Technical University VC Rajnish Arora said all institutions, devoted to the cause of promotion of Punjabi, should work in a cooperative manner rather than following the pattern of one-upmanship.

This is ridiculous to find serving and retired army officers washing their dirty linen in public.There is no regionalism or castiesm in Army then where is the question of Jats ruling or Sikhs ruling. Also the facilities are not withdrawn due to any other reason but due to misuse……so its better we mend our ways then to crib.
In south India , one old proverb is there ..”if your son is unfit to do any thing in normal life and difficult to maintain then send him to force “now this proverb is known to Punjabi communities also.
one software engineer in his starting it self ,he will get 25 to 35k per month and with in 2 year he will be getting 60 to 80 k or more . he will be in good cities like Bangalore , Delhi Hydrabd , Faridabad, Gudgaon , Pune Kolkata etc , and in army he will be getting pb- 3 starting with 5600 grade pay ,up to the rank of major .getting posting to all advanced places like leh , ladakh aiswal, dijjan digaru , pataan , aknoor , uri , dibrugarh , kialling pong or worst than this area . and getting T/d to some advanced area like Thoise , Glassier , Barmer ,Jaisalmer , Ramgarh, shiv, munaba , nal naliah .etc
and software engineer is going to out side India like US, UK , Honk Kong etc
he is having good life with his life partner with all felicities . his savings will be in US dollar’s , he will be having flats in all good cities and having ford or Mercedes / Toyota car etc . going for vacations in Thailand Malaysia , etc
No risk in his life , no climactic change in his duty place, if do not like his boss he will live the Organisation .
So why you blaming only Punjabi communities , all the young Indians having the good calculation about the their life .And they know how to make money fastest way . And Punjabi got more connection in Canada so they will get attracted to this heaven , like Keralalites are attracted to Gulf area . why to blame them .
May be it is the result of the present Army Chief ‘s policy who himself had alleged bias against the previous Sikh Chiefs & the would be next chief. During the past 2 & half years of Jat Chief Control the Punjabi’s not getting into the Army’s Officers cadremight have been the result of this hatred.
Punjabis know what is god for them so that is why they have stopped joining
after so many years they have realised now that it is the worst profession to join and to add the salt to wounds now Govt has degraded army officers to second grade. Hardly 1to2 percent of army officer get the grade pay of 10000 where as every other class 1 officer get the grade of 10000 upto 20 years of service. then very basic facilities like CSD for example buying cars etc are under the process of withdrawl. latest is the helper facilities being taken away where as other class 1 officer not they use for themselves even their relatives utilise it. my neighbour gets a civilian servant just because his brother is an officer in “SACHIVALAY” . whereas army officers are being penalised just for one or two helpers. SO WHAT ELSE YOU CAN EXPECT GENERAL SAHEB THE PUNJABIS SHOULD DO.
THE NDA commandant is talking only of Punjabis not joing the Army. Your comments donot sound correct for this because otherwise othe communities would also not take the defence services as professtion
Kartik probably does not know the the present army scales. Also you have gone off the main point of Punjabis. I donot think the orerlies will be withdrwn. The army generally does not work in Sachivalays. Its basic role is to work in filld/ war areas. CSD facilities cannot be withdrwn. As far as cars through CSD is concerned, it was a concession from the Punjab government i.e., only the persons of punjab State / serving in Punjab could buy them. But the CSD illegally started selling these to service personnel of other parts of India resulting in Crores of loss to the Punjab exchequer by the loss of Car Road Tax / Registration Amount. If it chequed by the CAG it will come out to be another big financial SCAM for Punjab & the CSD & many peoples head will roll into this Scam.
