‘Stressed’ BSF jawan commits suicide in Tripura

30 04 2012

A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan on Friday committed suicide in Tripura’s Dhalai district near the Bangladesh border, police said. The victim was identified as Lance Naik Fulan Singh, who belonged to Jandi village in western Uttar Pradesh, and was attached to BSF’s 103 battalion.

Though BSF officials said that the jawan took the extreme step because of not getting leave. “He had a long leave earlier this year,” said BSF Spokesperson B S Rawat, adding that a family dispute and isolated performance of duty might be the reason behind the suicide.

It is significant to note that authorities of paramilitary forces deployed in counter insurgency operation and in containing ethnic tension in Tripura had launched a new operation to reduce the stress level in officers and troops a few years ago. The trend of homicide and suicide among members of paramilitary forces had compelled the authorities to take measures.

Leading Tripura-based psychiatrist A K Nath said that isolation leads to tension and frustration, and sometimes to suicide, which has been increasing both among the armed forces as well as the general public. The sporadic ambushes, ethnic riots, carnage and exchanges with militants take a toll on the mindset of the security personnel. Moreover, troops with different backgrounds are posted from various parts of the country making it all the more difficult for one to cope with the stress. Witnessing killings, human evacuations after strife, poverty and other miseries also contribute to aggravate their mental condition, Nath said.

Generally army or other para military personnel, if posted in remote/ difficult areas, are rotated periodically with other personnel. It has to be seen from this angle.
