Suicides weigh Indian Army down

7 03 2012

The number of Army personnel who took their own lives far exceeds those who succumbed to enemy bullets last year.

“As many as 99 Army personnel committed suicide last year, while 65 were killed in security operations. Of the 99, 23 cases were registered in field areas and 76 in peace areas,” Army officials said, adding that the number of personnel committing suicide has gone down over the years.

In 2010, 115 personnel committed suicide while the figure stands at 110 for the year 2009. Number of suicide deaths for 2007 and 2008 are 142 and 150 respectively.

In a few cases, families of the personnel had alleged murder, following which inquiries were conducted to probe into the complaints.

A soldier can perform his duties only when he is sure there is some one to look after his family if he dies in operation. The paramount role of commanding officer is to ensure such a faith in soldier & civil authority at his home to help soldier family with speed in case of need.
In to- day’s contest a chief of army is worried about his own date of birth so as to have extra year of comforts & civil authority making crores & hiding in bed.
A desperate soldier when sees that he cannot look after his family, he gets depressed & takes this deadly action. One should not forget that under such circumstances national security is at stake. Come what way people will try to hide facts & save their skin. But see in last two how many persons have committed suicide, a British army will never take it lightly. We have followed their system. So revive civil & army accordingly
My sincere heart felt grief to family of soldier

It’s still the colonial army . The hang over is still intact with 18th century draconian Armed forces Acts and rules. Further there is a deep divide in respect to the live styles of the officers and the PBORs with hardly any difference in academic qualifications. The Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) mainly created as the interpreters of Indian origin to bridge the language gap between the British Officers and the native troops are now seen as the tools to the commissioned officers to exploit their own sub-ordinate abusing the ACRs as carrots. We need to reduce standing Army to appx 4 lakhs and introduce conscription. There is no other way to get rid of this man made problem.
