Allegedly after being tortured in army custody, a 40-year-old man was found dead today in south Assam’s Hailakandi district, official sources said.
The army’s artillery field regiment had picked up Iqbal Hussain Laskar from Ciparsangon area on October 8 on suspicion of being involved in a fake currency racket. But after being admitted to the Silchar Medical College Hospital today by the army, Laskar was pronounced dead, sources said.
The wife of the deceased has filed an FIR alleging that her husband died following torture by the army during custody. The postmortem report would be sent to the forensic laboratory in Guwahati to ascertain the cause of death. Meanwhile, a local minority organisation held demonstrations and announced a day-long district bandh tomorrow to protest against the incident.
