Two women were killed when a recklessly driven Army truck hit the scooter they were riding on the Kharar-Banur Road on Thursday afternoon. The deceased are Harbhajan Kaur, in her late 40s, and her sister-in-law Avtar Kaur, in her late 60s.
SHO of Kharar police station, Sub-Inspector Tarlochan Singh, said the accident occurred around 12.45 pm when the two women were on their way home in Shivalik City. Avtar was riding pillion.
They had reached near Arya College Road T-point when the Army truck tried to overtake their Kinetic Honda, but ended up hitting it from behind. The women fell on the road and were run over by the vehicle. They died on the spot. Both the victims were widows and had been living alone.
Harbhajan’s son, Harjit Singh, told the police that his mother and paternal aunt had gone to Ludhiana by bus after parking their scooter at the local bus stand. They returned from Ludhiana today and picked up their scooter from the bus stand.
Harjit, who immediately reached the spot on getting the information, caught hold of the truck driver, Lance Naik Beju Danial of 15 Mechanical Infantry, and handed him over to the local police. The police said the Armyman has been booked for causing death due to rash and negligent driving.
