27 08 2010

A military court at Udhampur on Thursday reduced six years of service of a colonel who molested a woman officer during their posting in J&K, in 2008.

The general court martial assembled at Udhampur (J&K) and directed authorities to forfeit six years’ service of the accused for the purpose of promotion apart from reprimanding him.

The orders were made by a five-member GCM headed by Brigadier Arvind Datta of Northern Command after hearing arguments of complainant, Major Megha Gupta, as well as the accused officer, Col Anurodh Mishra.

A native of Bangalore, Mishra is currently attached to headquarters 611 (independent) Air Defence brigade. According to the charge, Mishra had allegedly called the woman officer to his residence on the pretext of official briefings and misbehaved with her.

The reports of sexual harassment in the armed forces are on high rise as the case being reported just since January 2004.

In Sep 2007, major A K Lal, was dismissed by the court martial as the commander of the strategically-located 3 Infantry Division at Leh after a woman officer accused him of misbehaviour.
